Why Nordic Walking is the perfect fitness routine for every age and fitness level

Nordic Walking began in the 1930’s in Finland, developed initially by cross country skiers to maintain their fitness levels throughout the summer months. Since then, this fitness activity has developed into its own sport and can be defined as an ‘intensification of regular walking thanks to the active use of a pair of specially designed Nordic Walking poles, whilst maintaining the characteristics of natural, bio-mechanically correct walking and appropriate posture’ (INWA Nordic Walking definition 2022).

Nordic Walking has experienced significant growth worldwide since the 1990’s, reflecting a broader trend towards health and fitness, particularly in Europe and the UK, where it has been steadily building in popularity in the last twenty years. Globally, it is estimated that over 10 million people Nordic Walk, and that number continues to grow.

I have had a varied career in the health and social care sector and as a Ranger leading many guided walks, educating people about nature. Latterly, I moved into more of an outdoor fitness role, combining nature connection, coaching the ‘Couch to 5k’ program and leading health walks for adults experiencing mental health issues. I was looking for a different fitness activity with which to engage people as I found running was a challenging sport to get people to uptake, usually due to the intense nature of it on one’s knees and lower back. Back in 2022 I had a chance meeting with a Nordic Walking instructor. I had heard about its health benefits and wanted to know more. We took a 1:1 lesson together and I found I took to it quite naturally; I felt my upper body muscles engage in a way that felt relaxing and challenging in equal measure and I felt a meditative flow which reminded me of yoga – I was hooked!  Within two months I had qualified as a British Nordic Walking Instructor and subsequently qualified as a Gym Instructor. I have since been building my skills in and around Edinburgh green spaces, and to date, I have taught over 100 people the Nordic Walking technique.

So, what is all the hype?

Nordic Walking is a fitness activity that involves walking with specially designed poles, like ski poles, to engage the upper body while walking. The Nordic technique incorporates a rhythmic arm swing as you plant the poles with each step, in a fluid movement of the arms and legs. Nordic walking involves the same opposite arm to leg natural coordination of ordinary walking. This coordination between the upper and lower body helps activate the arms, shoulders and chest whilst also encouraging pelvic rotation and opposite shoulder rotation. We use the poles at a 45-degree angle, which encourages our posture to straighten up and be more open. This full body muscle engagement enhances cardiovascular capacity, increases calorie burn and aids muscle toning. This makes it more effective than ordinary walking, as it provides a full body workout while having a minimal impact on the joints.

When I was coaching running groups, people often complained that knee issues were a reason they discontinued running. I found that Nordic Walking saw a ten-fold uptake in comparrison, and that uptake converted into a community, highlighting how it can be more accessible and sustainable than higher impact fitness activities.

Another benefit to Nordic walking is that it is outdoors! It can be done on various terrains including woodland trails, beaches, mountains, tarmac, etc. all year-round providing lots of adventure too.

Who is it for?

It is an ideal activity for people who haven’t exercised for a while or dislike traditional sports or gym activities, or if you are rehabilitating from ill health or injury (with medical advice). Equally, if you’re already active, you can use Nordic Walking for cross-training.

There are three recognised intensity levels:

  • Health and Recreation level (gentle exercise)
  • Fitness level (more challenging, raising the heart rate higher)
  • High-Intensity level (vigorous exercise for athletes)

As you can see, there is a level of Nordic Walking for everyone, making it very accessible.
